You can turn automatic updates off

Why would you wish to do that?

Because updates tend to happen at night and if you are in circumstances where you are trying to manage power usage and data usage and you find yourself with an iffy Internet connection, you don't spend multiple hours freaking out about "My phone is probably bricked!" And "My battery is going to be DEAD!" And "I must have burned through ALL my data AGAIN and can't really afford more at the moment!" 

When the real issue was your update hung and failed due to poor Internet connection and it's all easily resolved the minute you have a good Internet connection again and, no, you aren't out of data but can't verify that because you have no connection.
